*Definitions
Tolerance: The maximum permissible error allowed for a specific thermometer. ASTM E-344 definition is: … the extreme values permitted by regulation or specification of the difference between the indication of a thermometer and the true value of temperature.
Uncertainty: The maximum expected error associated with a temperature measurement or calibration. ASTM E-344 definition is: the degree to which a measurement or calculation is in doubt, due to the influences both of bias and precision, relative to the accepted value.
Please note that the term Accuracy is a qualitative concept (and therefore should not have number values associated with it) meaning the closeness of agreement between the result of a temperature measurement and a true value of the temperature. It is most closely equivalent to uncertainty. We prefer not to use this term because it is misleading to our customers. An advertisement or data sheet could say a thermometer "is accurate to" a value but mean the uncertainty, and the customer will mistakenly assume it is the tolerance or maximum permissible error.
